Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes church is the first African-American Catholic church in the state and has become a growing and diverse congregation. They have acquired land on Edgewood Avenue, adjacent to their existing facilities on Boulevard in the Old Fourth Ward, to build a new sanctuary. However, they needed additional parking. The Archdiocese of Atlanta purchased 1.4 acres on Boulevard south of Edgewood for a parking lot. Lourdes and the Archdiocese encountered intense opposition to a surface parking lot.
Central Atlanta Progress and the Old Fourth Ward Business Association forged a compromise that was intended to satisfy the church’s requirements for parking but also serve as shared parking for the Edgewood/Auburn corridor businesses. The zoning ordinance requires the parking to be entirely enclosed with development of retail, office and housing. In essence, the project became a mixed-use development that provides parking for the parish during Sunday Mass.
Fabric has been working to put together the financing for a public/private partnership using subsidized funding for the project.
